Best Restaurants in Panama City Beach: A Local's Guide to Eating Well
PCB has hundreds of restaurants, but let's be honest: most of them are just okay. When you are paying vacation prices, you want the meal you'll actually talk about on the drive home.
After hosting families at our beachfront condos for years, we've learned that where you eat matters less than when you eat. Here is the insider list we give our guests to help them avoid the tourist traps and the two-hour waits.
The golden rule of PCB dining
During the summer, the most popular spots are packed by 5:30 PM. To avoid the crowds, try to eat by 4:30 PM or wait until after 8:00 PM. Anything in between is usually chaos. Also, don't worry about dressing up. If a place won't let you in wearing a clean t-shirt and flip-flops, you are probably in the wrong town.
1. The essential beach experience: Schooners
If you only have one night out, make it Schooners. They call themselves the "Last Local Beach Club" because it sits right on the sand without a massive resort looming over it.
The strategy: Show up around 4:00 PM and put your name in. You can take the kids twenty feet away to play in the Gulf while you wait for your buzzer.
The vibe: Every evening at sunset, they fire a literal cannon to celebrate the end of the day. It is a local tradition that kids absolutely love.
What to order: The Grouper Sandwich is the standard here, but the Seared Ahi Tuna is also excellent.
2. The "occasion" dinner: Firefly
When locals want a nice dinner that isn't stuffy, they head to Firefly. It is famous for the massive oak tree draped in fairy lights in the center of the dining room, creating a great atmosphere for a final vacation dinner.
Why it wins: It is tucked away in the Shoppes at Edgewater, so it stays shielded from the traffic on the main strip. It is consistently the best-executed food in the city.
What to order: The She-Crab Soup is non-negotiable. It has won awards for a reason.
3. The breakfast rite of passage: Thomas Donut & Snack Shop
Located on the quieter west end of the beach, Thomas Donut is a PCB institution.
The reality check: There will be a line, but it moves fast. They take cards now, so ignore any old guides saying it is cash-only. The seating is all outdoors at picnic tables.
The insider tip: The donuts are great, but the breakfast kolaches and the "Salty Dog" sandwich are the real reasons regulars show up.
One warning: They are closed on Mondays. Don't be the family standing sadly at the closed window.
4. Best for the whole crew: Sharky's Beachfront Restaurant
Sharky's is the classic, big-scale beach experience. It features a massive tiki hut atmosphere and a playground built right into the sand.
Why it works: If you have high-energy kids, this is the best spot in town. They can run around in the sand within eyesight of your table while you enjoy a drink. It makes for a much more relaxing dinner for the parents.
5. The iconic landmark: Pineapple Willy's
You can't miss Pineapple Willy's. It's the one with the long pier extending out into the Gulf.
The strategy: This spot is a madhouse at dinner. Go for lunch instead. You get the same view and the same famous ribs with half the wait time.
What to order: It sounds strange to order BBQ at a seafood place, but the ribs have been their signature since 1983.
6. The Nashville nightcap: Tootsie's Orchid Lounge
Located on Thomas Drive, Tootsie's is the sister to the famous Nashville honky-tonk. It isn't really a "dinner" spot, but it is the best place in town for live country music and a cold beer after the sun goes down. You will need to drive — it's a few miles east of the main strip — but worth the trip.
The grocery sanity hack
If you are staying in one of our condos, you will likely want to stock the kitchen. Do yourself a favor and skip the Walmart on Front Beach Road on a Saturday. It is a battleground. Drive five minutes further to the Publix at Breakfast Point. It is cleaner, calmer, and much better stocked.
