Panama City Beach Family Travel: Best Airports & Driving Tips

Most people don't think about the drive until they're in it. You've been in the car for six hours, the kids are done, and you're crawling down Hwy 98 in beach traffic trying to find your resort. Here's how to avoid that.

best airports for panama city beach

Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) is the clear winner for families. It's only 20–30 minutes from the beach, the terminal is small and easy to navigate, and security lines move fast — a huge help when you've got kids, strollers, or beach gear in tow.

If getting to the beach quickly is the priority, ECP is the answer. Every time.

Destin–Fort Walton Beach (VPS) is about 1.5 hours away, and often has more flight options and competitive fares. Worth checking if the price difference is significant.

Pensacola International (PNS) is around 2 hours out — typically the cheapest option if you're flexible on the extra drive time.

quick tip

If you're traveling with kids, paying a little extra to fly into ECP is almost always worth it. The shorter drive and smoother terminal experience more than make up for it.

easiest driving routes to panama city beach

The Florida Panhandle is made for road trips. Wide highways, easy navigation, long stretches of pine trees and then — right as you hit the coast — that first glimpse of the Gulf. It never gets old, no matter how many times you've made the drive.

from the north (Atlanta, Nashville, etc.)

Take I-65 South → I-10 East → Highway 79 South

One of the easiest routes, with simple turns and minimal stress. Highway 79 drops you right into Panama City Beach.

Recommended stop: Love's Travel Stop — Exit 70 on I-10

  • Super easy on/off access
  • Last large gas station before Highway 79
  • McDonald's on-site
  • 17750 FL-285, Defuniak Springs, FL 32435

from the west (Texas, Alabama)

Take I-10 East → Exit 85 → Highway 77 or Highway 79 South

Easy interstate driving with clear signage. Nothing complicated.

Recommended stop: Pilot Flying J — Bonifay, FL (Exit 112 on I-10)

  • Great for a quick refuel and snacks
  • Easy on/off access
  • 2923 FL-81, Ponce De Leon, FL 32455

from the east (Jacksonville, Tallahassee)

Take I-10 West → Highway 231 South

A straightforward route with lighter traffic and fewer slowdowns than the western approaches.

Recommended stop: Love's Travel Stop — Marianna, FL (Exit 142 on I-10)

  • Right off I-10 before heading south
  • Clean bathrooms — a big deal with kids
  • 2510 US-231, Cottondale, FL 32431

the bottom line

Panama City Beach family travel should feel easy from the start, not just when you hit the sand. Pick the right airport, take a simple route, plan a couple of smart stops — and the drive becomes part of the trip instead of just something to get through.

one more tip: time your arrival

The biggest mistake families make is pulling into PCB at 3:00 PM on a Saturday in July. You'll be sitting in Strip traffic for an hour just to get to your check-in desk. If you can arrive by 10:00 AM, do it. Drop the car, grab your beach bag, and head to the sand while your room gets ready. You'll already have a half-day in by the time everyone else is stuck on 98.
