What to Pack for Panama City Beach: The Real List

Most packing lists tell you to bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. You already know that. This is the practical list, built from years of watching families arrive at our condos. These are the items guests actually use and the things they usually wish they had brought along.

1. The beach bag essentials

Baby powder. This is the single best trick for a beach vacation. Rub a little powder on sandy legs or feet and the sand falls off instantly. It is the only real way to keep the beach from tracking into your car or all over the condo floor. Keep a small bottle in your bag for the entire week.

A soft-sided cooler. Resorts like Aqua and Calypso have strict rules against glass on the beach. A soft-sided insulated bag with a shoulder strap is much easier to manage than a heavy plastic chest when you are already lugging towels and gear across the sand.

A waterproof phone pouch. Don't rely on a sandwich bag. A proper waterproof pouch with a lanyard lets you take photos in the emerald water without worrying about a rogue wave. You will want those shots of the kids in the surf.

A high-quality umbrella or tent. The Florida sun is intense, especially between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. While we provide beach chair service for many of our units, having your own pop-up shade gives you the freedom to set up exactly where you want if the rental rows are full.

2. For the condo

Extra beach towels. Condos usually provide a standard set of towels, but it is rarely enough for a family heading to the pool and the beach multiple times a day. Bringing two extra quick-dry microfiber towels is a smart move. They take up almost no luggage space and dry much faster than heavy cotton.

A power strip. Between phones, tablets, and cameras, most condo outlets can't keep up with a family of four. A single power strip or a multi-port USB charger will keep everyone's devices ready for the next day without anyone fighting over a plug.

Reusable bags. These are great for grocery runs, but they are also perfect for hauling wet gear or sandy toys back from the shore. Florida has shifted away from plastic bags in many spots, so having a few of your own makes things easier.

3. For the kids

Flashlights. After the sun goes down, the beach comes alive with ghost crabs. They are harmless and fast, and kids go absolutely wild trying to find them with flashlights. It is a simple, free evening activity that often ends up being the highlight of the trip.

Water shoes. The sand is soft, but if you plan on exploring St. Andrews State Park or the jetties, there are rocks and shells to navigate. Water shoes make exploring the tide pools much easier on little feet.

A mesh toy bag. Never put sand toys in a solid bag. A cheap mesh laundry bag allows the sand to sift out and the toys to dry before you bring them back inside.

4. What to leave behind

Fancy clothes. Panama City Beach is exceptionally casual. You will see people in flip-flops and sundresses even at the nicer dinner spots like Firefly. Leave the suits and dress shoes at home — you won't use them.

Your own beach chairs. Check with us before you pack. Many of our rentals at Aqua and Calypso include beach chair service. Don't waste your trunk space on heavy chairs if you already have a set waiting for you on the sand.

Too much gear. Avoid overpacking. Most families find that they spend 90% of their time in a swimsuit and a cover-up.

5. A quick word on cash

Most local spots, including Thomas Donut, now take credit cards. However, it is still helpful to keep a little cash on hand for the smaller shaved-ice stands or beach vendors you might run into along the shore.
