Things to Do in Panama City Beach with Kids

Panama City Beach is genuinely one of the best places in the country to take kids. The Gulf water is calm and shallow — perfect for young ones. The beach itself is wide, the sand is white, and there's enough to do that you're never stuck just sitting. Here's a breakdown of what actually works.

the beach itself (start here)

This is not a marketing line: the Gulf of Mexico on PCB's shore is exceptionally good for kids. The water is clear, warm, and the drop-off is gradual. You can walk 50 feet out and still be waist-deep. Little ones can splash in ankle-deep water forever.

Bring sand toys, get there early for a good spot, and plan for at least one full beach day. You'll likely end up with three.

One thing to know: the water color shifts depending on wind and weather. Some days it's that iconic emerald-green. Other days it's murkier after a storm. That's nature — not something any beach can control.

Pier Park

Pier Park is a large outdoor shopping and entertainment center on the west end of the beach. It's walkable, family-friendly, and packed with restaurants, shops, and things to do. Parking is free. Plan a few hours here, especially on a cloudy afternoon.

WonderWorks

On the east end of the strip, WonderWorks is an "upside-down house" attraction with interactive exhibits, a ropes course, and laser tag. Great for older kids and a solid rainy-day option.

Ripley's Believe It or Not

Also on the east end, Ripley's is a classic — weird, fun, and easy to burn a couple of hours in. Good backup plan when the beach isn't cooperating.

Coconut Creek Mini Golf

Just down the road from Pier Park, Coconut Creek has two elaborate 18-hole courses and a giant hedge maze. Easy to fit into an afternoon and good for all ages.

Shipwreck Island Water Park

This is the main water park in PCB, and it's a good one. Not massive like a theme park, but well-maintained, not overly crowded compared to bigger parks, and with rides for all ages — from the slow Lazy River to serious drop slides. There's a dedicated area for younger kids with smaller slides and shallow splash zones.

Bring water shoes. Arrive when it opens to beat the lines on the bigger rides. Full sun, bring serious sunscreen — water parks are brutal for burns.

Shell Island

Shell Island is an undeveloped barrier island accessible by pontoon boat from the state park or a short private boat trip. No buildings, no roads — just a long stretch of pristine beach and some of the best snorkeling on the Gulf Coast.

The snorkeling isn't guaranteed (water clarity depends on conditions), but even when it's murky, the island itself is beautiful. Dolphins are commonly spotted on the boat ride over.

Great for kids who are comfortable in the water and old enough to appreciate something a little more adventurous. Half-day trip.

St. Andrews State Park

Just east of the main strip, St. Andrews is one of the most beautiful state parks in Florida. Campgrounds, hiking trails, a fishing pier, and a boat launch to Shell Island. The park beaches are less crowded than the public beaches and the swimming area near the park entrance is particularly calm and shallow.

Worth a half-day if your family likes outdoor spaces.

tips for families at PCB

Sunscreen. This applies everywhere, but the Gulf Coast reflection is aggressive. Reapply constantly. Bring a beach umbrella.

Timing on the water. July and August have afternoon thunderstorms almost daily. They usually roll in around 2–4pm and clear fast. Plan beach time in the morning and use the afternoon for indoor activities or a pool day.

Food. There's no shortage of options in PCB, but a lot of it on the main strip is touristy and overpriced. We put together a full local restaurant guide with the spots worth your time and when to show up to avoid the wait.

Ghost crabs. After the sun goes down, bring flashlights to the beach. The sand comes alive with ghost crabs — harmless, fast, and kids go absolutely wild chasing them. It's free, it's memorable, and it's one of those PCB things most visitors never know about.

Pack light, but bring a cooler. Snacks and drinks at the beach save money and keep kids from melting down when they're hot and hungry. A soft cooler with wheels is worth it.
